Senior Hardware Engineer

Position Purpose:

The Sr. Hardware Engineer will take a lead role in cross-platform systems development across core radar and machine vision product lines. They will help guide various new product developments and technology evolution considerations as well as support existing released products.

The Sr. Hardware Engineer will work with the product management group and other key stakeholders to synthesize technical requirements, then design and implement them into ISS products. They will work independently with little supervision within an Agile team environment, and be expected to consistently create high-quality designs that meet the needs of the business. The position will require exceptional critical thinking, prudent problem-solving, and strong team collaboration skills to identify and implement the best technologies to support next-generation product development from inception to full deployment.

The ideal candidate will thrive on varied opportunities to make major contributions on components all over the ISS technology range. E.g., designing machine vision embedded systems architecture one day, then characterizing radar sensor performance the next. They will be versatile and very well-rounded and find the variety of projects fun and energizing. They will have a keen desire to vigorously challenge and apply a wide range of their skillsets and use them to deliver competitive products in intelligent transportation systems and Smart City applications. They will take great pride and feel accomplishment in seeing their work deployed prominently in the field helping optimize the safety and efficiency of our road infrastructure.

Essential Position Functions:

  • Assume responsibility for architecture development, execution, delivery, and success of hardware for machine vision and radar sensor applications.
  • Design and develop embedded systems to serve as a bridge between front-end sensors and artificial intelligence decision engines for vehicle detection.
  • Work both independently and collaboratively within a high-efficiency SCRUM team.
  • Multi-task rapidly across different product lines.
  • Collaborate with teammates and stakeholders across the product development organization to gain understanding of the problem domain and to gather and document product and design requirements.
  • Test, debug, and troubleshoot across the ISS technology suite.  Develop and build test systems for radar sensor and machine vision systems.
  • Document new designs and update and revise existing design docs.
  • Review design docs of teammates, ask questions, contribute, and accept feedback, share best practice recommendations.
  • Identify technologies and implement associated hardware architecture to maintain ISS as an industry leader in machine vision and radar technology.
  • Interface with vendors, regulatory and environmental test facilities, manufacturing, and other internal groups, and provide work direction to contractors, lab personnel and other technical staff while executing design tasks. Mentor and provide technical assistance as required.

Education and Experience/Skills Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent discipline.
  • 5+ years of hardware system development experience.
  • Proven ability to develop system architecture and to debug complex embedded systems.
  • Experience with circuit board design and build processes.
  • Experience working with and troubleshooting embedded systems.
  • Strong problem solving ability.
  • Self-motivated individual with excellent work ethics and a “can-do” attitude.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English.

Desirable Skills/Attributes:

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Systems Engineering
  • Experience with FPGAs, digital design, and analog design.
  • Knowledge of internet of things systems and cloud-based data collection.
  • Familiarity with mobile wireless infrastructure (5G/LTE/LoRA, etc.)
  • Understanding of mechanical packaging design and system tradeoffs.
  • Experience with embedded real time video or radar systems.
  • Strong critical and creative problem-solving skills, complimented by excellent attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written required to effectively collaborate with team members, discuss ideas, provide feedback and share knowledge.

Physical Demands:

Should be able to work comfortably in a typical office environment.  Some minor lifting may be required.
