This position is located in our office in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Position Purpose:

The software development team at Image Sensing System needs an experienced software engineering manager that is eager to influence the success of our machine vision, radar, hosted app, and artificial intelligence (AI) based platforms and products. The successful candidate will manage a team of talented software developers responsible for embedded applications, user interfaces, and web applications within our Autoscope (machine vision), RTMS (radar), and Intellitraffiq (hosted application) product lines.  The ideal candidate will exhibit a “player/coach” mentality along with the capacity to influence and oversee multiple simultaneous development efforts.    As a member of the engineering leadership team, the candidate must be able to collaborate with management peers from other engineering disciplines to identify and prioritize cross team dependencies.          

Essential Position Functions:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of software engineers. Align resources to best address backlog work items based upon resource skillset.
  • Work closely with product management to understand and refine product functional requirements.
  • Communicate and collaborate with other engineering managers to identify cross-team dependencies.
  • Execute personnel changes to align team skillset with development roadmap.
  • Monitor and report on team execution metrics such as development velocity and project schedule to business unit stakeholders.
  • Define and enforce software development processes and policies for building quality into products.
  • Manage aspects of outsourced design efforts including work definition, tracking, and quality management.
  • Coordinate team estimation and planning meetings to break down new product and/or feature requests.
  • Promote an Agile/Scrum software development culture, iterating with internal and external stakeholders and reducing overall development cycle-time.
  • Enforce proper usage of application lifecycle management tools, e.g. TFS, Jenkins.
  • Create and maintain processes that control access to our code base to ensure protection of our intellectual property.
  • Perform performance reviews and provide career growth guidance.
  • Collaborate with product management to identify and correct legacy product issues.
  • Occasional travel to customer or partner sites, both domestic and international.

 Education and Experience/Skills Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering; or relevant work experience. 
  • Strong organizational/planning skills

  • Experience with embedded software development
  • Applied understanding of object oriented design principles
  • Knowledge of the following languages/tools/OS:
    • C, C++, C#, .NET, WPF, Python
    • MS Visual Studio
    • Windows, Linux
    • Virtual machines
    • Revision management tools (SVN, git, etc)
  • Experience with the software development process, either as a developer or an experienced manager of developers
  • Familiarity with Agile Scrum methodology

Desirable Skills/Attributes:

  • Experience using TFS as a product backlog and resource management tool
  • Experience with the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe)
  • Experience managing a diverse code base which is applied to many products
  • Experience with machine vision or radar systems
  • Familiarity with ASP.NET, JSON, JavaScript, AngularJS
  • Familiarity with U-Boot 
  • Familiarity with device driver development
  • Familiarity with manufacturing test software design and deployment
  • Experience managing outsourced software development activities

Physical Demands:

Requirement to work comfortably in a typical office and/or factory environment.  Some minor lifting may be required.
