Principal Hardware Engineer
Position Purpose:
The Principal Hardware Engineer is responsible for performing analysis, design and development of single and integrated hardware products for our advanced video detection systems deployed for Intelligent Transportation markets. Responsibilities also include design for manufacturability (DFM), support of prototype build, verification of measurement systems, development of tooling and fixtures, and specification of assembly equipment.
Essential Position Functions:
- Develop Technical specifications and serve as a key technical contributor on research and development.
- Plan design verification and validation tests, and implement test methodologies in compliance with quality and product development process of the company.
- Work may encompass one or several areas of engineering including electronic design, mechanical design, reliability engineering, or other related fields.
- Duties may include research, evaluation, component qualification, development and application of new processes and methods to products.
- Interface with other engineering teams to benchmark competitive products; evaluate commercial-off-the-shelf video sub-systems, camera and video technologies, support detection technology development and system integration.
- Optimize manufacturing process to exceed quality requirements
- Lead or participate in projects to improve products after release for manufacturability, quality improvements, and/or cost reduction
- Work closely with engineering team and CMs to:
- evaluate product issues
- conduct failure analysis on customer complaints and product defects
- manage component obsolescence
- Develop test plans to evaluate alternate components, materials and processes to resolve product issues.
- Participate in continuous process improvement efforts.
- Develop and implement cost reduction initiatives.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field plus 12 or more year’s relevant experience or equivalent blend of education and work experience.
- Minimum of five years of experience is needed with CPLD, high-density FPGA designs, simulation, synthesis using Verilog/VHDL, and place and route tools.
- Extensive experience in mixed signal designs with strong emphasis in Design for Manufacturing and Test (DFM and DFT) techniques.
- Experience in hardware architecture development, requirements analysis, develop quality requirements and work with contract manufacturers to transition prototypes to manufacturing.
- Strong experience in global compliance and regulatory requirements i.e. CE, UL, FCC.
- Experience with industrial design or subcontracting mechanical design for metal and plastic product enclosures.
- Strong experience with ORCAD schematic capture and PCB board layout packages
- Experience with circuit simulation (SPICE based or other) as well as circuit modeling, analysis tools and root cause analysis process.
- Full knowledge of the use of lab instruments i.e. oscilloscopes, multi-meters, spectrum analyzers, logic analyzers among others.
- Experience in USB, DDR, EIA-485 communication networks, digital circuit design, sensor interfaces, filters, power supply, analog circuits and operational amplifiers.
- Prior experience with mixed signal and high-speed digital board layout and usage of SI tools for post-layout EMI analysis.
- Expertise in programming in C, C++, and DSP Assembly languages; developing manufacturing diagnostics/test firmware to validate hardware designs.
- Experience working with contract manufacturers, supplying production-ready design documentation, ensuring that assembly instructions are properly followed, developing test procedures, and analyzing manufacturer’s test results.
- Knowledge of Machine Vision Engines, Single/Multi Core Processors, DSPs, 10/100BaseT Ethernet networks, PCI, Verilog/VHDL, and test bench development.
- Prior experience in design and development of analog/mixed signal circuits, including DACs, ADCs, high-speed, high-resolution data converters, switch-cap circuitry, PLL, sigma-delta modulators, and regulators.
- Strong analytical and interpersonal skills to work in a cross functional team. Self-motivated attitude with strong problem solving skills and aptitude to present complex concepts in a clear non-technical manner.
Preferences:
- Experience with MATLAB.
- Knowledge on developing soft-core and multi-core processors based hardware.
- Experience with real-time video communications, and wired and wireless technology, such as 802.11 or Bluetooth.
- Experience with ISO9001 or other quality systems.
- Working knowledge of RF applications design, testing, and troubleshooting.
- Six-Sigma certification.
- Fluency in spoken/written Mandarin Chinese and/or other foreign languages.
